Highlighting the Importance of Blood Donation
By: Dr. John Agwunobi, M.D., M.B.A., M.P.H., Co-President & Chief Health and Nutrition Officer
Herbalife Nutrition and the American Red Cross have something amazing in common: we both rely on our communities to succeed. At Herbalife Nutrition, our independent distributors bring our products to their communities while supporting and coaching their customers. The American Red Cross relies on a community of donors to supply blood for local hospitals.
Collectively, both organizations want to help people achieve healthier lives. It’s this commitment to health and community that makes us proud to work with the American Red Cross.
The History of Our Partnership
Since 2006, Herbalife Nutrition has proudly supported the American Red Cross by raising funds for global disaster relief events, increasing awareness, and hosting onsite blood drives for employees and independent distributors.
Blood donations from these drives, combined with the donations collected on the Herbalife Nutrition bloodmobile that covers Southern California, have been critical to maintaining the blood supply. In total, nearly 8,000 units of lifesaving blood has been collected through these efforts.
Blood contains many substances, including red blood cells (full of iron), white blood cells, plasma, and platelets, along with water and various nutrients and minerals, which is why it’s critical that donors replenish their bodies with post-donation snacks. Since the end of 2015, we have supplied more than 950,000 protein bars to approximately 120 Red Cross blood donation centers across the U.S.
Herbalife Nutrition has held a seat on the American Red Cross Los Angeles Board since 2008. Our very own Dr. Kristy Appelhans, Senior Director, Global Post-Market Medical Surveillance, currently holds a seat on the Los Angeles Regional Board of Directors. She joined the board in early 2018, inspired by a desire to protect, nurture, and help others while playing a more active role in promoting community health.
Why Donate Blood?
Blood donation is a public health matter that deserves our full attention. According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. One donation can potentially save up to three lives, but only 3% of the eligible U.S. population donates blood each year.
Tymia’s story underlines the importance of donating blood and making sure hospitals have all blood types readily available when patients need them. Thousands of patients rely on blood transfusions throughout their lives to stay healthy, but engagement from new blood donors has declined steadily for most of the past decade.
Since blood is perishable and cannot be artificially produced, the Red Cross needs all eligible individuals to roll up their sleeves, and give to help those in need. This is why blood donation is a humanitarian effort. Whenever you donate blood, you are contributing to another person’s healthcare needs during a critical, perhaps life-threatening moment.
Finding Ways to Get Involved
Before she served on the regional board, Dr. Appelhans was already serving her patients in her private practice and protecting consumers worldwide as the head of Herbalife Nutrition’s Global Post-Market Safety Surveillance department. Still, she was motivated to further share her drive to help others.
We all can do the same and make a difference in our communities. Donating blood is powerful. It brings people together for the sole purpose of helping someone in need. In today’s busy world, the opportunities to help someone so personally and profoundly, let alone bring diverse communities together, have become too few and far between.
This is why we support the American Red Cross and encourage our employees and distributors to participate. So please join us in making a meaningful contribution. Find your nearest Red Cross blood drive and get ready to make a difference. To schedule an appointment, visit redcross.org or download the American Red Cross donor app.
It is a simple process with a very rewarding outcome—the possibility to make a positive, life-changing impact for people in need.
