When tragedy strikes, our humanity tends to shine brightest. Neighbors become heroes. Strangers become saviors. A community’s true character is revealed. People become more united, persistent, and determined to succeed. And small acts of kindness can make an enormous difference in people’s lives.

When a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Morelos and Puebla on September 19 – leaving homes in rubble, hundreds of men and women injured or worse, and countless futures forever changed – the immediate instincts of our employees at Herbalife Nutrition Mexico demonstrated who we truly are, as a company, as co-workers, as citizens.

We first found safety, of course; checked in on our loved ones; ensured everyone was accounted for and our facilities were intact. Then, almost instantly, we sprung to action. No one was asked to do or contribute anything; everyone just jumped right in to do their part in the response effort.

Herbalife Nutrition team members went to work aiding fellow Mexicans affected directly by the earthquake. Many volunteered to remove debris from buildings and houses that came crashing down. We collected monetary donations, food, clothing, toys, construction material to help victims recover and start to rebuild.

Our employees distributed 11,900 Formula 1 Meal Express Bars to first responders and volunteers on the front lines, in shelters, and elsewhere. Our distributors took their own products and went to impacted areas to give away shakes, teas, and bars.

The Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF) raised more than $60,000 U.S. dollars for Save the Children that went towards programs to support the most vulnerable including child protection and psychosocial support at child-friendly spaces, as well as distributing school and household kits. In addition, thanks to the generous donations of our distributors and employees in Mexico, HFF granted additional disaster relief funding to a local Casa Herbalife that serves as a shelter and orphanage for children.

Here at Herbalife Nutrition, in Mexico and around the world, we spend all our time trying to improve people’s lives for the better; helping them reach their goals of health and happiness; enabling and empowering them to tap into their full purpose through the power of improved nutrition, greater exercise, the business opportunity and a community of support.

Yet there are moments and times of tragedy – that we don’t plan for and that we hope never occur – when we have to go above and beyond what’s comfortable and expected.

That, I am proud to say, is what Herbalife Nutrition Mexico’s employees and distributors do in a crisis and year round. And that is reflective of our ethos as a company and a brand: to fulfill our purpose to make the world healthier and happier and be neighbors and partners of good character, each and every day.
