Herbalife Celebrates Manufacturing Day at Company-Owned Facilities in North Carolina and California

Manufacturing the highest quality products is fundamental to our mission at Herbalife. This focus on manufacturing is why our silver sponsorship of Manufacturing Day on October 2 made so much sense. Herbalife is the first nutrition products company in the United States to participate in Manufacturing Day. By building a strong manufacturing infrastructure, we increase confidence in our company and products.

Manufacturing Day is a grassroots effort by U.S. manufacturers to improve public perception of manufacturing in America by coordinating awareness-raising activities at a variety of locations across the country. Manufacturing has always been a critical part of the American economy and an important element of Herbalife’s workforce, so participating in Manufacturing Day is important to us.

We make Herbalife® products at Herbalife Innovation and Manufacturing (H.I.M.) facilities as well as carefully-selected partners in the United States, Europe, India, South America and Asia. Since 2009, we have purchased three company-owned facilities and we are working on opening a fourth next year. With this ability to self-manufacture, we are on pace to produce 65 percent of our inner nutrition products by the end of 2016.

One of the goals of Manufacturing Day is to educate students about key career paths available in the modern U.S. manufacturing industry. We are proud to partner with the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association as they work to attract talent to this exciting industry.

On October 2, we hosted separate open houses at our facilities in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Lake Forest, California. Events were a little bit different in both locations. In Winston-Salem, we invited high school and college students, teachers, elected officials and local media to learn more about modern manufacturing technology and careers.

We are so proud of what the team in Winston-Salem has accomplished in such a short period of time. We purchased it a few years ago, completely retrofitted it for our manufacturing, and today have more than 500 employees working two shifts a day, five days a week. H.I.M. Winston-Salem is best in class and it complies with U.S. current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) for dietary supplements and applicable food-safety regulations. The facility has also been certified by NSF International as having the proper processes, technology and quality assurance to meet its rigorous standards.

H.I.M. Winston-Salem is our largest company-owned facility. It is so large that the NFL could play all 16 of its weekly games inside at once. Our most important powder, tea and liquid products are made here and exported to more than 50 countries where we operate.

The size and scale of operations in Winston-Salem is impressive. We can output over 16,000 canisters of Formula 1 Healthy Meal Nutritional Shake Mix per hour. That’s about 480,000 individual shakes made every 60 minutes. We can produce about 2,000 gallons of aloe in less than three hours, which is enough for 16,000 bottles. And our machines preparing the tea have the ability to blend 450 kilograms in less than two hours, enough to make about 270,000 cups of tea.

Several federal and local officials were in attendance, including United States Representative Virginia Foxx from North Carolina, as company employees and visiting students discussed a variety of topics including what attracted Herbalife employees to careers in manufacturing, what are some of the career opportunities in manufacturing, what special skills or education are required to excel in the field, and what makes working at H.I.M. unique.

At H.I.M. Lake Forest in California on Manufacturing Day, local college students had the opportunity to meet with company executives and tour the state-of-the-art facility.

Our first Manufacturing Day was a big success. In both locations, we met our goal of educating local students about opportunities in manufacturing and shining a spotlight on the backbone of America’s economy and strength, its robust manufacturing capability. We look forward to continuing to highlight the importance of operating first-in class manufacturing facilities and meeting the needs of Independent Herbalife Members and their customers with the highest quality nutrition products.
