Dietary Protein is the Focus at Prestigious Nutrition Conference

I’m looking forward to joining some of my colleagues in attending the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) North America 2017 Annual Meeting in La Jolla, California from Jan. 20 to Jan. 25. ILSI is a public, non-profit, scientific foundation where scientists from academia, government and industry collaborate to generate scientific information and advance the understanding and application of science related to the nutritional quality and safety of the food supply.
Scientific program topics at the conference include personalized nutrition, cancer and food, food allergens, safe water and dietary protein. The discussion on protein is particularly relevant to Herbalife Nutrition. Our best-selling product, Formula 1 Healthy Meal Nutritional Shake, is made with 9 grams of plant protein per serving and our Global Nutrition Philosophy recommends protein intake up to 30 percent of total calories as the optimal intake range for healthy and active individuals. Scientific authorities in many countries have established recommended daily intake of protein in one or more population groups based on the body’s basic and essential needs. Typically, authoritative bodies recommend protein consumption in the range of 10-17% of total calories, or 0.8-1.25 g/kg body weight/day. However, scientific evidence* indicates that protein intake higher than the typical recommended range may be beneficial in maintaining or building lean muscle mass, promoting fat loss, satiety and weight management in healthy, active people as well as older adults.
Spotlight on Protein
The debate about what is the optimal amount and type of protein in the diet is evolving. The 2015-2020 US Dietary Guidelines state that a healthy diet should include “a variety of protein foods, including seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, legumes (beans and peas), and nuts, seeds, and soy products.”

The ILSI session about protein is designed to provide emerging perspectives on protein requirements for humans and food technologies addressing protein quality, sourcing and development. Experts will present on Protein: Appetite Control and Weight; Protein Requirements: Beyond the RDA;
Assessing Protein Quality: Navigating Regulations and Sources; and Protein: Practical Challenges of Product Development, Delivery & Sustainability.
In addition to attending the scientific sessions, Herbalife Nutrition experts have been taking part in the Protein Committee, which is focused on long-term effects of protein intake at levels above daily-recommended intakes. Investigators are assessing the impact of a high protein diet on study participants’ cardio metabolic health, inflammation and performance/disability levels.
