Kona, Here We Come

All of the hard work, dedication to improvement, and sheer focus of 2016 has been building up to one day. On October 8, in Kona, Hawaii, I’ll be competing against the best in the world at the 2016 Ironman World Championship. After finishing fifth in 2015, I’m motivated more than ever to improve on that.

A lot has happened since last year’s race: I won at Ironman Lake Placid in July, where I set a new course record of 9:09:42. That has given me more confidence heading into this year’s World Championship. The 70.3 wins at Chattanooga in May and Coeur d’Alene in June also helped me prepare mentally and physically, work through the kinks, and allowed me to improve my performance tremendously.

Am I excited? You better believe it! Kona is the king of triathlons. It’s a grueling challenge, which is right up my alley. It gives me an opportunity to push myself against the best athletes in the world. It’s the ultimate goal and the one race that all long-distance triathletes care about. It’s a year of pressure leading up to this one day. Are you doing everything you can to get the best out of yourself and perform on that one day?

To prepare for this event, I train in Tucson, Arizona, which has similar climate (100 degree days), terrain (rugged) and conditions (unpredictable) as Kona. The winds are erratic – you never know where they’re coming from – and the roads are rough and jarring to the core, especially after 120-mile rides. It’s a perfect preamble to Kona and a great way to get ready for it.

This last year has taught me a lot. I’ve been focused on my nutrition, which is absolutely crucial to not only winning, but actually finishing a race. I’ve also increased my hydration intake significantly. Now it’s Herbalife24® CR7 Drive for me the whole way through!
