Bayron Piedra: Elite Runner Chases Victory with Herbalife Nutrition

For some people, figuring out what their passion is doesn’t happen until later in life. For Herbalife-sponsored middle-distance and long-distance runner Bayron Piedra of Ecuador, who will be competing at the 2016 world games in Rio, he was certain of the dream he wanted to pursue by the age of 10. “I had a strong feeling early on that I wanted to dedicate myself to becoming a world-class athlete, specifically as a runner,” says Piedra. “To me, training and competing is as pure and honorable of an endeavor as there is.”

Uphill Battle
Piedra got his start competing in 5k races and gradually increasing his distance until he was running full marathons covering 26.2 miles. Living in Ecuador, that was no simple task. “Here, I had to create the opportunity to become a marathon runner,” says Piedra. “Since we don’t have any full marathons, I had to make my mark in other types of races. The good news is, right now, we have momentum with 10k races, so that creates opportunity for up-and-coming runners looking to make a name for themselves.”

Over the course of his storied career, Piedra has made a name for himself with his participation in three previous world games, including Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012. He’s also achieved honors at the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the 2013 14th IAAF World Championships, among numerous other achievements. Today, he is widely considered the best Ecuadorian runner of all time. He credits his success to working hard and training both his body and his mind for competition. “My physical and mental attributes complement each other when I’m competing in a marathon,” he says. “I train in both areas to perform at my best. The mental aspect, especially, comes into play in the last leg of a marathon when I need to engage my will to keep a pace that will allow me to cross the finish line ahead of the competition.” It is his will― perhaps more than anything— that has made the running world sit up and take notice. Piedra is well known, and even feared, for his ability to tough it out when the going gets rough and others have called it quits.  He knows a strong will is an invaluable asset, but so is dedicated attention to a high quality nutrition regimen.

Fueling His Fire
Since joining Team Herbalife, Piedra says that his nutrition has improved drastically, supporting both his daily life and athletic performance. “With good nutrition, I have more energy to run each day and to maximize my training,” he says. “It also gives me the extra push I need in competition.” He chooses Herbalife® products because of the company’s commitment to quality products, many of which are geared towards athletes.  His nutrition starts with Herbalife24® Formula 1 Sport in the morning before training because it’s balanced with carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals. For immediate and sustained muscle recovery post-workout*, he uses Herbalife24® Rebuild Strength. He also takes Herbalife® Herbal Tea Concentrate with caffeine, which jump-starts his metabolism and gives him a boost to help him feel revitalized, and Herbalife® Herbal Aloe Concentrate to soothe his stomach and support nutrient absorption.

Looking forward, Piedra is excited about representing Ecuador at the 2016 world games in Rio and competing with the best athletes in the world. “I’ve worked incredibly hard to get where I am. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for me, an important moment for my country and I aim to do it with pride and dignity.”
